Welcome everybody to episode 169 of the You Can't Comp This NBA Trading Card Podcast. I am your host Adam Aimee. I'm not joined today by Russell Gibson. He has taken a vacation, a well-earned vacation I must add. But yes, it's just me flying solo this week. So I apologize in advance if this is just me waffling for an hour, but there's a little bit to talk about.
00:34.39
Speaker
For those that are live on the YouTube, I probably won't be getting around to responding to questions, not that I do on the live very actively, but we rus trust Russell and I will be going through comments through the week and responding where we can. While I'm on it, just to let the almighty algorithm know that we are live on YouTube every time we we record a podcast,
00:57.75
Speaker
If you could hit subscribe and like the video, do all the sharing and the stuff, that would be awesome. We would really appreciate it, as annoying as it can be. Let's just hope my voice doesn't um doesn't pitter out. And for those that are watching on the YouTube, yes, I have got a yeah ah lovely reference for to Weekend at Bernie's representing Russell's spot on the visuals this week. But without further ado, let's get into the NBA. there's It's back, it's back, this is the week. um We couldn't not put an episode up because the and NBA has returned. There are games afoot and I figured this week I could break down ah the first five days of the NBA, look for some notable mentions and impacts, potential impacts on the hobby. Before we go into the and NBA, I am going to start off with a listener.
01:54.94
Speaker
Not a question, more of a statement. This one is from Jared Begg, who after the last week's episode, we we yeah we broke down the Menendez Brothers, that or the Mark Jackson Menendez Brothers card due to the popularity of the lovely Netflix series. Everybody remembers the the infamous, I guess, 1990 card that has them at Madison Square Garden.
02:23.54
Speaker
But Jared writes, in the recent episode, the boys talked about the Mark Jackson Menendez card. Well, there's actually a Michael Jordan card with the famous Criminal Brothers in it, and it's now fetching massive prices. Below is the card and recent comps. I also put the most expensive sale of 179 US dollars in. Check your MJ collections, people. This might be a goldmine.
02:49.27
Speaker
So yeah, you're correct. um There is a a shot of the infamous Menendez Brothers in this MJ. It's the 1997 upper deck, a Decade of Dominance, number 89, Michael Jordan, featuring the Menendez Brothers in in shot there in the in the seat, I guess. For those that are playing at home, it's really small, but they are in the, in the in the crowd, sort of just behind Jordan's legs. So yes, another Menendez Brothers card. I know Russell didn't want to give this more than two minutes of air time, so I thought he'd give it the opening two minutes. Hey, how's that? um It's one of those cards, I guess. I mean, we talk about quirky cards. Michael Jordan's got a few of them. Obviously, the Johnny Kilroy being a joke card. The number 12, the Sam Vincent, which Michael Jordan features on.
03:45.61
Speaker
but I'd be very interested to hear what the listeners have to say with regards to this isn't just a Mark Jackson card who's never really offer obviously had hobby love this is a Michael Jordan card does this does this come out now as a new as a new card because I'm noticing in all of these comps that One key thing here is, this card isn't graded. So, these are all raw versions of a relatively common card from 1994, not Now I want to confirm which set it was.
04:25.45
Speaker
There'll be some some research interesting. It's 94 95 up a deck and then 1997 up a deck. So Yeah, if someone can clarify, but there are no graded cards. That's the that's the thing that's baffling me What what does a graded version of this card go for is it because it's got the goat on it and the Menendez brothers while the Netflix show is is airing does it actually does it impact in that much of a significant amount that this is a, I don't know, a $200, $300 card.
04:57.40
Speaker
um Yeah, let us know either in the comments or on the socials because I would be very very interested to hear What what you all think? um I don't know. I maybe maybe people start going through their collections to To look for I don't know for different players celebrities. I Don't know. Do we do we find if players are watching other players? Is that the next is that the next thing? I No, let us know. Anyway, I'm not giving this any more oxygen. Let's go across to the NBA. And before we go to our first break, I'm going to break down opening night, which saw the Boston Celtics absolutely dominate the New York Knickerbockers, which was um
05:50.76
Speaker
Yeah, I didn't think it'd be this much of a blowout, but yeah, the Celtics, as we all expect, are, um... have come hungry to the start of this season. And and yeah, Jason Tatum off to a ah great start for the season. So I'm going to hazard a guess. this is The 37 and 10 and 10 being assists is not going to to hurt Jason Tatum's card prices to start the season. On the other side, the New York Knicks still trying to find themselves after sort of after the Carl Anthony town's trade. We'll see how that
06:27.04
Speaker
how that progresses. On to game two of of the the opening night docket and it was the Lakers beating the Timberwolves. with Anthony Edwards the only real shining light for the for the T-wolves but Anthony Davis a massive massive game once again I don't I think a strong season from Edwards sees his card prices um be impacted but nothing that is going to set I suppose the world on fire
07:00.02
Speaker
as far as the hobby. I think Anthony Davis has found his spot. Russell and I have talked about this many times. However, digging into the box score, solid solid first game for DiVincenzo. The big, big name that didn't happen in game one but Dalton Connect, it looks like this young fellow for the Lakers is going to get some minutes.
07:21.47
Speaker
So that is definitely, definitely one on the on the radar as we enter the season. All right, let's hope we can find some gold to look at, because otherwise this is gonna be a very, very, very boring episode of just recapping games. Day two of the NBA, and this is the first time I've delved into the box scores. ah It's good to see Cade Cunningham come out with a strong start for the Pistons, even though they did lose to the Pacers,
07:50.84
Speaker
Now, Detroit's probably where there's some early season potential. I say potential in such a, what would you say? Well, Ivy, Ivy scoring 17 points. Kaye Cunningham with a 28 is probably a notable for the night. the for the night But there's not not a lot to look at, not not a lot as far as um hyping up ah hyping up an unknown rookie. Who have we got?
08:20.31
Speaker
Ben Sheppard got a couple of minutes for the for the paces but nothing that's sort of setting setting the world on fire it's at this point. Now, who have we got? Chris Boucher for the Raptors and Evan Mobley the standouts in the Cavs Raptors game.
08:39.60
Speaker
Might be an interesting season for Mobley, but yeah, not not unexpected results here. Yarnas in his, as I've quoted at the revenge tour, off to a strong start for the season, and Tyrese Maxi obviously will be one of the standouts for the Philadelphia 76ers. And I think Maxi might be one that we want to keep an eye on through this season, especially now that it's it's known that Embiid is going to take a real step back and rest.
09:08.01
Speaker
but whether or not that impacts the Sixers record or not is yet to be seen. And the standout, the other standout from this second day of NBA action would be Paulo Banchero with a big 33 and 11 double double in a win over the Heat. So for all those Paulo collectors out there, I would be I would be very excited for seeing Banchero putting up big numbers, I guess, to start the to start this campaign. KCP, not a huge impact in his first game in a mia in Miami, in a magic uniform. And yeah, no no needles being pushed as far as hobby love in Miami either, though really. Hakez coming off the bench with 13 points, but yes, no.
09:58.39
Speaker
No surprise, no superstar debuts. I guess in the hawks Hawks Nets you've got your value that Russell and I have been talking about. Let's have a quick squeeze. Ben Simmons is back in action and has actually played 24 minutes of basketball this year. That's probably the highlight so far for Brooklyn and Cam Thomas we all know can score.
10:20.08
Speaker
but nothing really of note there. Big big knife for Trae Young to open up the season which is never a bad thing and 28 points off the bench for oh god I'm not I'm not even gonna a Kong Wu is that the surname but 28 points in 28 minutes that's a that's a bit of a that's a bit of a notable performance so let's uh let's take a bit of a ah look it's interesting to see in I don't know this Atlanta team I'm still I'm very low on them so I don't know this could this could be an interesting season for the Hawks Russell seems to be a bit higher than I on them our lovely overall number one pick played a total of 19 minutes seven points
11:04.78
Speaker
not really impacting much else and the single rebound. So not the biggest of of ah debuts for our number one overall draft pick, but I don't know, Hawks getting a win. Could be interesting times ahead, who knows? All right, well, we'll do one more game. let's got all on Josh Giddy's debut as a bull, let's go into that. Chicago Bulls going down to the to the Pelicans.
11:34.05
Speaker
123, 111. Zach Levine scoring some points, but Brandon Ingram coming up big for the Pelicans. Josh Giddy, first game as a ball. Put up some okay numbers. Nothing's setting the ground on fire. That basically, I don't know. I don't know what to make of this ball's lineup. I think maybe some Aussies got a bit carried away. Jaylen Smith, the notable off the bench there with 15 points. Maybe the new landing space for Jaylen Smith is going to be a positive.
12:03.63
Speaker
Have we got any other notables? We've got Brandon Ingram, CJ McCollum. It's such a team effort in in New Orleans these days with the way they they go about their business. It's an interesting um starting lineup, but the depth I think is going to be the the k for the the that question mark for these guys. All right, I have waffled on long enough ah before, so for those that are that are playing at home on on now over on our radio station, which is Central Coast Radio, I will now bid you farewell for a moment or six to go and grab a drink and and listen to some tunes.
12:47.66
Speaker
And for those that are playing on the YouTube, I'm just going to pause for a little bit and I'm going to take a quick break. Hobby Hangout will be coming to Melbourne the 17th of November. So guys, if you've got your traders box still packed up from the Nationals, don't unpack it. In fact, add more stuff to it. Make sure it's already there because it's a huge part of the Hobby Hangout is to take Your trade is there and do trades with people. It's going to be at the Melbourne Pavilion. Heaps of stuff going on there. So we've got live breaks. We've got panels. We've got live podcasts. Adam, you and I will be there live podcasting. Now just a smattering, a random announcement of stalls there. We've got McLaren cards, shield stamps, Stan Brook cards, edge collectibles, Stasis collectibles. This one's a tricky one.
13:35.91
Speaker
PG CG the social club collectors unboxed collectibles cherry is going to be there. We'll have to beep that word out. JT collectibles big three cards and supplies. Peter's goat cards shout out to our sponsors fast break they're going to be there too. So i get on that. I believe that the The pre-sale tickets have sold out we could win the five hundred dollars so that that offer is now gone and then we've got sydney coming up so sydney hobby hangout don't forget about sydney of course sunday the first of december at the sydney roundhouse trading zone poka zone workshop live breaks and paneling matthew pain of course is going to be there
14:14.57
Speaker
And again, that same sort of like huge list of vendors. this It's just loaded that show. So get on down to either show, guys. You just won't regret it. Same thing that we're talking about with the Nationals. If you don't have cash, it doesn't matter. Take your traders down there, wheel and deal with vendors. Give them a hard time until you get the deal that makes you happy. And we are, sorry, I am back.
14:39.63
Speaker
Yeah, looking through looking through the first couple of days of NBA action, still nothing that really stands out on the on the collector's front. It's really good to see Lamello ball back, a big 30 point, actually almost a triple double from Lamello ball. Really good start after a season riddle with injury.
15:01.30
Speaker
in know In a win over the Rockets, Shingoon also with a really big 25 and 18. So those Shingoon collectors might have something to be excited about this season if Mini Jokic decides to really take that next step. But good positive signs on the stat bo stat line anyway for Shingoon and ball collectors.
15:25.79
Speaker
Here's an interesting one though, Jarmurant back 22 points, 10 assists in his return to the floor, getting the Grizz a win over the Jazz. Laurie Markinan with 35 points, but that is to be expected.
15:41.45
Speaker
That's a box score I might actually go down and have a bit of a look at. The Jazz, look, there's a little bit there. we've got They've got a couple of young players that we we might be looking at through the through the middle part of the season to see how they're all progressing. But this this ah this new look Memphis Grizzlies,
16:01.61
Speaker
this is This is where I think there is some some hobby hobby goodness. What have we got? 27 points from Altama. Zach Eddy, I know a few people are, um or Eddy. Eddy? Eddy.
16:17.05
Speaker
I know a lot of people are are very high on 80 this year. It's good to see um a debut, Brandon Clark back. It's nice to see a healthy, a healthy grizz. And I think people, we can all agree that a healthy grizzly is much more entertaining. And to see Jammer out, come back and actually have an impact is is good for the hobby anyway. I don't know if that's good for the league. Actually, it is good for the league. It's good for the league and the hobby. russell If Russell was here, I'm sure he would agree. What have we got? Steph Curry doing Steph Curry things in a win against the Trailblazers. Scoot Henderson with 22-4-4 in that 140-104 loss.
17:05.73
Speaker
um to the Warriors. And then what have we got? Good old Kevin Durant. Phoenix haven't really got much hobby wise, aside from Durant and Booker. um actually a quite quite opening night from Devin Booker 15 points Kevin Durant though 25 to start to start things off against the Clippers James Harden really the only standout there about the the mismatch the the mishmash I guess I'll call it of players that are um over in Los Angeles the their new
17:39.30
Speaker
um their new stadium. So a close one, Sun's finally, well they got their first win in OT and the Clippers, well, we predicted they will. So that was a pretty big day too. I was waiting to see when this guy had pop up. Okay, so Jason Tatum, another another double double this time with rebounds and points, which is good to see. Jordan Paul, I don't even wanna know how many how many shots that man took in order to to get to that 26 points based on his percentages.
18:10.38
Speaker
It'd be quite a bit. All right, Spurs Mavericks. I'm sure everybody is excited to know that Luca Doncic almost got a triple double in a 11 point win over the Spurs. What I was a bit shocked was, Wembley seemed to come out a little bit slow. 17 points, nine rebounds, one assists, four turnovers, one block.
18:34.10
Speaker
this isn't the This wasn't, I guess, the the freak of nature alien that we saw last season. It's a only the first game, of course, but but Chris Paul, yeah, some... some concerning numbers, three points, eight assists, even, and a couple of, was it two jet two turnovers? I don't know. is it is it Are they finding their feet? Is this gonna be, what are we gonna see from this Spurs team?
19:04.33
Speaker
Stefan Castle, their number four draft pick. Eight points. It's not a bad little um two-turn notice. It's a bit annoying, but like he he made an impact. He was there. He was on the floor. Definitely good to see him in the rotation nice and early. um I didn't think there was any any doubt that he would be. And then, is it Julian Champagne?
19:27.94
Speaker
I'm sure that's different. Champagni. I don't know. I call it Champagni. Anyway, that was yeah a pretty slow start to to the season for the Spurs, but amidst all the pre-season slums, Klay Thompson has has found his shooting rhythm. I don't think that's gonna move the needle on his prices, personally, but a solid all-round effort from, I suppose, the main the main core of this this new look Dallas, well, sorry, rejuvenated Dallas list with the addition of of of Clay and re-edition of Spencer Dinwiddie.
20:08.39
Speaker
Who else have we got? Derek Lively with 15 points off the bench. Interesting to see Gafford doing really well, but they're sharing the duties with Lively in the at the centre position. yeah Hopefully I haven't um underestimated the Mavs. I think they're still not a complete unit, but that's to be to be seen. Luca has has started the season well.
20:33.30
Speaker
As has Anthony Edwards. couple of Couple of big point games. Looks like he hasn't missed a beat. Interesting to keep an eye on those players that did play in the Olympic team, I think. If if I am, if I would sort of expect more ever out of players, it would be people that, the younger players that were on that that Olympic team. Obviously, Tatum is one of those. um Halliburton, you've got you've got the likes of Edwards, like traveling with,
21:02.97
Speaker
a team that's made up of like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, that's invaluable experience. That's as as important as i don't know the Spurs bringing Chris Paul in to to to sort of help with the development of a young core in San Antonio. so Good to see Anthony Edwards sort of continuing on. Demarter Rosen hitting the scoreboard in his new uniform for the Sacramento Kings but was not to be unfortunately. Now it's one game so I'm not going to ring an alarm bell and we'll probably go to another lot of recaps but the Denver Nuggets put up 87 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Curious to know if people think that is a
21:52.89
Speaker
That is credit to the Thunder or that is a reflection of the Nuggets. Chet Holmgren with a big, big double, double 25 and 14 there and SGA doing as SGA does with ah with a lot of points there.
22:11.29
Speaker
um Aaron Wiggins off the bench might be one to watch. As for the Nuggets though, maybe there isn't. maybe Maybe this hasn't been retooled well. Maybe the loss of KCP and the lack of depth may come to the forefront. Jamal Murray with only the 12 points. Yeah, yeah this is um this is an uncharacteristic loss early in the season for the Nuggets. Overreaction, probably, but Yeah, I don't know, maybe the Joker can't carry the nuggets all the way to the Promised Land a yeah ah fourth time, sort for a fourth MVP anyway. Alright, go on, we are but almost almost at the halfway point of the amount of games that have been played. There's nothing that's setting setting my alarm bells off going, oh my god, get on this guy.
23:04.38
Speaker
um However, however, back to back losses for the Philadelphia 76ers. Going down yesterday to the Raptors, Kelly Oubre Jr. being the standout high scorer there with 28. That was a surprise to me. 24 from Maxi, but we are we're definitely seeing with with their big man Joel Embiid out of the lineup, they are not a cohesive unit.
23:34.17
Speaker
obviously with whilst missing two of their stars I guess with Paul George gone it's not a true reflection but I don't know I don't know why you go go all in and then and then don't sort of go at 100 miles an hour I know it's a long season But anyway, going into the Toronto box score, I would just like to shout out for those that are on rookie watch, Jonathan Magobo, Mogbo. God, where i and I added an O. Anyway, 12 points off the bench, played 23 minutes. This guy is the 31st pick in the draft, but it looks like he's getting some serious minutes, so he might be one to watch if you are prospecting on rookies.
24:18.30
Speaker
Definitely good to see players getting solid minutes early in the season so might be a a bit of a ah a Sneaky one to to get round and that's all I'm gonna talk about the Raptors, but it's it's always nice to see different players pop up magic have gone ah two wins after downing the Nets and Let's do a check-in here on the Magic Power Low. 15 9 6. Not the dominant 30 plus point performance. I think if Power Low really needs to
24:58.31
Speaker
He does need to get that consistency with his scoring in order to to really take that next step and and push the the magic forward. But yeah, no no hobby alerts, I guess.
25:15.27
Speaker
unless you consider Franz Wagner a a hobby alert, but not so much. And I guess for all the wrong reasons, I'm gonna open the Indiana New York game, which is a rematch of the Eastern Conference semis last year. Tyrese Halliburton minus 23, zero points, zero from seven from three, zero from eight field goals attempted. What a horrendous start to the season for Halliburton.
25:42.79
Speaker
Does this impact his long-term prices? Probably not. Does this impact his confidence? Probably. um They're dipping into the bag, they're trying a different a few different things. They're gonna have to find an identity this season and yeah, maybe that means some opportunities for the likes of Ben Shepard and John Furphy, so.
26:03.21
Speaker
that's That's the only hobby love I get out of the first few games here. Good to see the Knicks finally click into gear, Brunson, Bridges, Towns and Hart all getting over 20 points and all starters getting into double figures. Doesn't go to show a lot for the depth depth of the team, but at least they are on the winners list. And with that,
26:27.81
Speaker
I am going to take another break. Grab a drink, listen to some tunes, relax, and I know we're missing Russell. Obviously, ah he's not dead for those that have just tuned in, but for those that are missing Russell, he's a nice little ad from another one of our sponsors.
26:48.75
Speaker

27:17.52
Speaker
In terms of supplies, they've got the full gamut of supplies, their penny sleeves, top loaders, everything on and on. You can also now do PSA and also ah BGS grading with the boys too and I believe that is in direct partnership with the hobby but obviously all the details will be on the website there.
27:39.47
Speaker
And look, if you do get down to their shop, which is at 75 Tulip Street in Cheltenham, please tell them that Adam and Russell sent them down and make sure you take your time when you go down there because they have got really well curated boxes. They've got the dollar boxes, the $5, they've got the $10 and they've got a cabinet full of, I'm using air quotes now, but that's sort of higher end product in the last cabinets there too. so So guys, thank you so much for your support.
28:09.11
Speaker
And I am back! This is, um... It's a bit of an experience, this whole flying solo thing. And yeah, it's it it's difficult to to bounce ideas off somebody when you're the only person in the room. That said, I've got questions for everybody. i i will be i'll be I'm curious to know who you're prospecting on earlier in the season, who you've been holding, moving into the next game, who you've been holding.
28:40.40
Speaker
because yeah, it looks like we've had some exciting, so an exciting start and there's some, I mean, we're not gonna go over the top, but after a couple of games, we've seen some some progress, some maybes on the radar. um And I would i would like to to to hear what your thoughts are. The Pistons went down to the Cavs.
29:04.78
Speaker
Cade Cunningham 33 points so two very solid starts for Cade. Jared Allen the standard out for the Cavs. Good to see a good spread across the board.
29:18.95
Speaker
for the for the Cleveland Cavaliers. that That whole all the starters in double figures with ah who who's off the bench that's scoring? Well, Ty Jerome. So it it's a team effort. It's good to see everybody sort of getting in and around it. But Cade, 33 points, Jaden, Ivy, 22.
29:39.72
Speaker
these are These are very positive outcomes for the for the Pistons. So if you've been holding on to Cades, you may have done yourself a credit. 33 points and 28 points is not a bad start to the season. We might be seeing something out of Cade Cunningham yet.
30:01.25
Speaker
Definitely a positive. Unfortunately, the Pistons couldn't get the W and moved to 0 and 2 and the Cavs moved to 2 and 0. But in another good, good, feel-good story, it's nice to see Trey Young with a big 38, 10 assist, 8 rebound game, but Lamello Ball also with 34, 5 and 4.
30:21.76
Speaker
um big box scores in the Hawks Hornets game from the, I suppose the biggest hobby presence from both teams being Lamello Ball and Trey Young. So good to see them start these seasons nice and strong. Miles Bridges also contributing there and Trey Mann in sort of coming off the bench dropping 17 for the Hornets. Once again, let's have a look. Young Arisa Shaw.
30:51.70
Speaker
another five points so the number one pick has come off the bench a couple of games played some minutes can't say it's been the most exciting of starts but it's early days we all know that Kobe played six minutes and got one rebound in his first game and Yeah, good to see the Hawks start the season nice and strong. So interesting times there. The Bucks went down to the Bulls, not without a big fight from Yana Center to Kumpo with a big 38 and 11 double-double. But Kobe White dropping 35 points to seal the fate of the Bucks. Guinea with another relatively solid performance.
31:38.51
Speaker
17, nine and six, not terrible. um For though that all the Aussies playing at home with regards to Josh Giddy, I think it will take him some time to fit into the system. But and but another double digit performance from Jaylen Smith off the bench, which is probably good for those Jaylen Smith collectors, those prospecting. Zach Levine again, 25 points. So I don't know, the Bulls have sort of come out of the blocks and At least they're they're trying to compete this season or maybe the Bucks are the ones that aren't competing. Speaking of the one-and-one club, Jar Marant 24 points um in a loss to the Rockets. So at least Jar's putting up some points.
32:21.67
Speaker
Anything, it's it's good to see a bit of a spread across the team. Scottie Pippen Jr. dropping 13 points. How are these new? Look, Houston Rockets going. Whitmore with 11, Tari Eason with 13, Jalen Green with 22, Shanguin with 16. So Shanguin's not like the stand to stand out, but jamara Jabari Smith Jr. with 14. So it's good to see, I guess, a lot of of spread, but yeah, yeah.
32:51.66
Speaker
I don't know, both these teams are probably making up the the numbers. Zack Eddy or Eddy doing well again, which is another positive. And once again, it's good to see that the Memphis Grizzlies have a lot of healthy players returning. Another big scoring effort from the Warriors, but that's against relatively weak competition. Buddy heel dropping 27, Steph with 20. I don't know, I don't know what to think of the,

the Warriors this year, but at least they've they've made sort of, you know, start of the season strong with a couple ah couple of wings, wins pretty disappointing performance from Kaminga, not sure if he got injured, not that I've been paying attention to the Warriors. But once again, the Jazz, are we seeing any value out of our young fellas, Keontae George, 12 points. Once again, it's, the Jazz is such a,
33:48.41
Speaker
For me, they're a very unexciting team, so it makes it difficult to to get excited about their their young ones, e it like hobby-wise, really impacting the hobby, even if they do have like a big game or two.
34:03.54
Speaker
Now on to big games, Zion returns for the Pelicans and has come back with a nice big double double 16 and 11 with seven assists so really nice all-round effort from Zion there. McCollum, Hawkins and Ingram all contributing in that one so I Yeah, interesting interesting first game for Zion. Sort of doing a bit of everything. Doing what he probably needs to do. And that is distribute the ball a bit more. Which is, I don't know, his plus minus is plus seven. It's good to see. Pelicans, Blazers, you know it's sort of a training run for them.
34:42.53
Speaker
any big standouts, scoot with the 15 points, but yeah, not a whole lot to write home about, or really prospecting wise for the trailblazer. I don't know, I think we're gonna see an up and down season from scoot.
34:57.14
Speaker
And then yesterday, from 22 points down, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns. Notable, notable to see that Austin Reeves sort of came out with 26 points. Anthony Davis back-to-back 35 point games in LeBron James, well, in year 22. He's the only one that's done, done this at this level, so.
35:20.54
Speaker
impressive, and I think, I don't think it moves the needle on the bronze cards, that's for sure, but maybe it just goes to cement the career that this man's had. and the fact that there's no there's no d dethroning him off off the mountain, I guess, Mount Rushmore. um Dalton Connect, another eight points off the bench in limited time. I'm thinking Lakers fans are going to enjoy having a rookie to collect, so don't be surprised if you see a bit of, like once the cards start coming out, that Dalton Connect does have a little bit of ah a following, as he's already sort of
36:00.31
Speaker
gaining some some momentum amongst the Los Angeles faithful. Notables for Phoenix there, Kevin Durant, so off to ah a pretty strong start, but yeah, I think we've all been down this path before. Kevin Durant is is where Kevin Durant is, as far as hobby hobby value, yeah.
36:21.06
Speaker
Yeah, and from another big day in the NBA, this will be, we've got the last lot of games. I'm not gonna go through the scores of each games. Clippers get their first win over the Nuggets. Are the Nuggets in trouble? Who knows? Nikoli Jokic is definitely gonna do everything he can to get them over the line. They are 0-2, but not without Jokic trying. 41.9 rebounds for assists. Is this unexpected from you the Joker? I don't think so.
36:48.24
Speaker
Donovan Mitchell with a big game. Kula Bali with a standout for the Wizards. I think the Wizards box score is gonna be a ah different name every night. um umm I'm not sure what to expect, ah but really good from the Cavs to see a big spread scoring wise as well, though Jared Allen ah getting up there, Garland getting up there. It's it's not the same same names over and over again, which is really positive.
37:14.67
Speaker
um So yeah, Cab's moved to 3-0, Celtic's moved to 3-0 after a win over the Pistons, Cade, 21-10 assists, 6 rebounds, another solid game, not quite the 30 piece he had but Three from three, three huge games from Jason Tatum, and I think this man may have a chip on his shoulder this year. So you can thank Steve Kerr at the Olympics for for putting a chip on Jason Tatum's shoulder. ah Another 37 points today. ah He is, yeah, he's definitely started the season quite strongly. And Jimmy Butler, I haven't really seen him much in any of the box scores, but 26-8-8, not a bad,
37:57.09
Speaker
A bad little box score, lamello ball, another big 27, 8 and 7. So he would, he would be my one to watch as far as somebody sort of taking that next step and becoming a, well he's already been an all-star once, but but coming back from injury and really um putting his stamp on things. It's tough in Charlotte.
38:19.94
Speaker
but I think Lamello Ball's showing that he's, even if he is a really good player and a really bad team, that it starts with being a really, really good player. So, who knows? Some interesting things on the cards from Lamello Ball. um Scotty Barnes still going to work, really positive. There's no, and there we have a Julius Randall in the T Wolves box score. Can't help but ask what happened to Anthony Edwards. They both got 24 points.
38:48.36
Speaker
Interested to see how this how this starts to I suppose unfold things in Minnesota and And how this new team because it does the the structure of the team looks very different now with with Randall there But I think they've got some exciting option good little win there Toronto. I don't know Grady Dick 25 points nice. Yeah Mogbo, not as big a a game. Yeah, some, I don't know, there's a lot of opportunity in Toronto this year, I think. The Grizzlies moving in, two wins, one loss. Orlando taking an L, Paolo with the 16 points. Interesting that, I think, I really do think that in order for the Magic to take that step and become the next Thunder, they're gonna need Paolo to stand up and really get consistent on the scoreboard.
39:37.82
Speaker
but um Yeah, pretty slow start to the season for KZP, but it's not just his offense that we need. It's his, the the team will need his defense. Memphis, JAMA ran 16 points, but plus 18, which is good. So 10 assists. It's good to see JAH healthy three games in a row. Santi Aldama, 22 points off the bench, mind you. Not bad at all. Yeah, I think, I think,
40:05.03
Speaker
We're gonna get a very exciting look at Memphis. I think they're gonna be okay this year. I think now that we've got a bunch of healthy players, we'll be able to, yeah, I think they're gonna they're gonna be okay. And the Thunder with another big win, Jalen Williams, the star with 24-9 and eight. So good to see OKC starting strong again, Zach Levine being the big score for the Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs getting their first win of the season. Can't help myself, I have to go for a look through the box score here. Right, what's happening in Houston land? Shingoon, 22 minutes, six points. Bugger all, bugger all, bugger all. Not a good backup to that big opening game. Fred Van Vliet, yep, have we got any? Jabari Smith Jr. Yeah, Jaylen Green's the only shining light there really. Jock Landau for the Aussies.
41:01.22
Speaker
With 13 points off the bench, also a notable for all of our Australian listeners. yeah This is the stat we wanted to see. Victor Wimbunyana, 29 points, seven rebounds, one assist, three blocks, and Chris Paul, three points, nine assists, three points, nine assists, not nine turnovers. He did have four though. Stephen Castle, eight points off the bench.
41:28.00
Speaker
I think the Spurs are occasionally gonna put on a bit of a show. But I don't know, Chris Paul seems to be more of a coach than a than ah than a player these days. And I think that's what he's there for. so But it's good to see when we bounce back with a positive game there, 29-7-1. On to the Dallas Phoenix game. And Phoenix bounced back after their loss on their back-to-back. Luca couldn't do it, with even with a 40-10 game.
41:58.51
Speaker
They fell to the Suns. Kevin Durant, another 30 piece for him. But do we expect any less at this stage in Kevin Durant's career? um It is the three. It's Clay, it's Kyrie, and it's Luca going to work. here They're the only ones having that offensive impact.
42:17.50
Speaker
lively, a bit of a quiet quiet night, even though we had the 11 boards off the bench. I don't know, limited sample size, but you can see that it's gonna be an interesting season. Devon Booker 21 points. Nurkic doing all right with his 18 and 14, very serviceable there against the Biggs in lively and gaffered. So, hmm, early, early season fun going on here. And then the last game,
42:43.47
Speaker
to recap before I go into our notable card sales of the week and a player versus player, is the Los Angeles Lakers moving to three and zero. It's a shame that Russell's not here to talk about it. Beating the Sacramento Kings 127, LeBron James lighting it up with a 32, 14, and 10 triple double as the oldest man in the NBA. Very exciting game to watch.
43:13.98
Speaker
digging into the box score. Good to see Sabonis and Fox on fire. Demar really starting to settle into Sacramento, but it might be the depth. It might be a lack of depth in in Sacramento, or it might've just been an off game. um LeBron, huge. Anthony Davis, again, over 30 points, huge. All of the Lakers starters in double figures. And I know I'm a Lakers fan, so we can take it with all the bias.
43:41.85
Speaker
that it comes that comes with it, but Dalton Connect, 10 points off the bench in 20 minutes. This kid is gonna get, I didn't think we'd get opportunities. Looks like JJ likes him and LeBron doesn't mind playing with him. So, um Dalton Connect, hey? Very, very interesting times ahead.
44:04.07
Speaker
hobby-wise, I don't know, I think my takeaway so far, after the first five days of and NBA action, my first my first thoughts would be, Trey Young, question mark, positive, on an upwards trajectory, possible, I mean, the guy's tanked.
44:22.95
Speaker
pretty hard price-wise. Cade Cunningham, the the yeah this could be the the year that potential is realised if he stays fit and healthy, even though he's in a similar situation to Lamello Ball. I think both of them have Have started the season very strong and who knows who knows Early thoughts, maybe the the Nuggets don't have the depth. Maybe they're gonna struggle this season I'm not gonna overreact looks like Yarnas is on a is on a mission Jason Tatum He's definitely on a mission and should be considered
44:57.75
Speaker
right up there with MVP and mvp voting. Maybe this is the year Anthony Davis puts his hat in the ring for MVP. I'd like to see that as a passing of the torch from LeBron. Interesting, i'm I'm glad my team doesn't suck at the moment. I think there's a lot of exciting basketball happening and I think that it's hobby reflections early on. There's gonna be a few little opportunities.
45:23.87
Speaker
Yeah, this there's going to be some changes made within these squads and the people that the players that are getting minutes early I think are the ones that that really
45:39.61
Speaker
Yeah, the the ones that get the opportunities early that will really impact the hobby when you when you start seeing cards like Hoops and and whatnot come out. All those first day autographs um next season from Don Russ. So players to watch out for early on already. It's good to see. I will break it but down a bit more as far as its hobby, the way it's impacted the hobby. Obviously next week when Russell russell returns. I am gonna take a short break and when I get back,
46:10.15
Speaker
I will go through just to wrap up with some card letter, um notable sales, and we'll tie this bad boy off with a player versus player and I will post them up on socials just to get your thoughts given. I will be arguing for and against both, I guess.
46:28.28
Speaker
We'll be back. US Sports Cards Australia. Thank you to Ross and team USCA. We really appreciate your support. Now Ross has been slaving away on his project COMCA. So if you go to ussportscardsaustralia.com.au, click on the three little noodles on the left hand side and COMCA will become available for you to click on.
46:55.46
Speaker
What you'll find there is basically a small store and it's it's growing since the last time I clicked onto it. You submit all of your cards to Ross and Ross will put them online for you and it's basically a consignment service. So then people go in there and buy your cards. Ross will give you out the money and he'll post out the cards to the people. So the other thing that Ross is really keen to do for people too is if you're a breaker,
47:20.69
Speaker
and you've got cards that people don't even want to pay for postage, so they're just sitting there in a huge box. You might get 50 cents or a dollar for each card, but there's a couple of hundred in there. That's the type of service that Ross is trying to build up here and and start to get cards rolling around the hobby is what Ross wants to do. So... On some rolling. Yeah, usportscardsaustralia.com.au. Thank you so much um for your support, Ross. We are very, very grateful for it.
47:45.60
Speaker
And we are back. ah Yeah, it's it's been a bit of a show. I've gone through a bunch of thoughts about players to invest in, what what's been standing out early in the season. I probably should have given that a bit more of ah a rundown as far as my by top three. So I'll say Jason Tatum, positive. Trey Young, keep an eye out. And Actually, now Trey Young lamello ball, keep an eye out. Cade Cunningham, could be his year. And Anthony Edwards, still still doing still doing Anthony Edwards things. I think I just named five players instead of three. My maths is clearly off. um We'll make it a top five, get them and I'll put Trey and thingo. Dalton connect is number five, that's my point. Anywho, let's go into some
48:43.13
Speaker
Where did I put it? i did the I tried to prepare as best as I could. um Notable sales. Shall we? Alright, where's the card ladder bucket? Keep the photo of Bernie. There we go. Alright, notable sale on Heritage auctions, 4th of October this year, 2003, tops Chrome Lebron James,
49:05.45
Speaker
Gold refractor number 250 sold for $645,000. Very interesting. So that was on Heritage auctions. God, that's ah that's an investment card and a half, isn't it? the LeBron's in year 22 and just put up a triple double. So I think that's all that needs to be said about LeBron James as far as like, I'm sure he's not Michael Jordan, but God, this man is a freak of nature and that rookie card can only go up.
49:35.49
Speaker
That would be my my thought. Speaking of which, eye-catching sale, the 2020 prison LeBron James number one gold to 10 PSA 9 sold for $94,082 US dollars.
49:53.65
Speaker
um on on Leland's, or Leland's? Leland's on October 19th. That is the Kobe tribute dunk. ah Yeah, that is an eye-catching sale for sure. That's that's a nice big one, almost 100K US. It's a gold card, like it's a color match. That's, ah yeah, that goes that goes in the, if you're a LeBron PC, you'd be happy to have one of those for sure.
50:20.48
Speaker
Who else have we got? We've done the Scotty Pippen because now I'm just going to be selfish and look at stuff that I that i like. um Star Rubies, Scotty Pippen, Skybox Premium, numbered to 50, PSA 7.5, sold for 16,470.
50:38.39
Speaker
on October 3rd. That's a nice one. Let's make it more NBA re relevant. ah The Topps Chrome Victor Wenbenjana autographs so orange numbered to 25 sold for 10,370 with golden on the 10th of October.
50:58.82
Speaker
So another Victor Wimberñana. This one is numbered to 25 in the orange. While we're on Victor, let's bring up the 2023-24 Crop Tops Mercury Victor Wimberñana Superfract of 101, sold for $32,000. Now,
51:23.13
Speaker
Not much to the card. It's ah it's a horizontal, not a vertical. It's yet another one of one. I don't know if one of ones have just become, not obsolete, but it's like it's got to the point where we're like, is it really? It's just another one. To me, that's just how it feels. sir and it like It just doesn't seem to be as uncommon. Is that the right word? Probably is the wrong word, but hey.
51:52.76
Speaker
ah do do Notable sale, to headlines. 2012 Prism, Dame Lillard Gold, numbered the 10, which is also his rookie year, sold for $21,000 on the 13th of October. This was, yeah, it's pop seven, so not a bad, that, bit what, pop seven. So seven of the 10 cards are PSA 10.
52:21.68
Speaker
Maybe having one of the nines is more rare. But 20, look, yeah, 21,000 on Fnatic's premiere. The card sold for, so it's up 500 bucks from a year ago. So I guess another DAME collector purchased it. Interesting, interesting. Back to Wembley.
52:41.92
Speaker
What have we got? $16,200 on Fanatics Collect for the Prism Decker, Victor Wermanyana 116, Mojo to 25. And it was a PSA 10. It's actually a ah nice looking card, given the, like the Mojo with the the white Spurs uniform. I don't know, I actually dig that card. I think it's got some some class about it, even though, ah I don't know.
53:09.88
Speaker
does it Is it a real rookie shield, like it's the third release from Prism this year? I don't know. can talk i can I can break that one down with Russell for sure. All right, what have we got? One more, given the result today from the Lakers, a back on October 20th.
53:29.01
Speaker
A LeBron James downtown from 2017 Cornerstones. um Yeah, $3,480. PSA 10 pop count is 48 on the LeBron James downtown and that man has been hitting them from downtown early in the season. Some phenomenal stuff early in the season from the great man LeBron James. Okay, I think we're all goingnna you're all gonna know my answer to this. Our first player versus player, and if you are if you're watching on the YouTube, please put it in the comments below. ah If you if you you listen to the pod, just jump onto our socials, reply to us send us a message on Instagram, send us a,
54:15.61
Speaker
or put it on the socials on Facebook, paint in the Facebook group, i'll ah I'll take a screenshot of this one and I'll post it up. as a who you got and why we have which card would you prefer a 2018 prism Jalen Brunson sensational signatures black one of one or a 2017 prism Jason Tatum mosaic autograph gold to 10 auto auto is also
54:47.37
Speaker
So PSA 10 gold to 10 with the auto 10 so everything 10 10 10 or the one of one Brunson card ladder values the Tatum at six and a half thousand and values the Brunson one of one at twelve thousand nine hundred now I'm not one to go against um Card ladder, but I am taking the Jason Tatum every day of the week um I think this is his year. I think early signs, if you don't have Tatum in your MVP discussions and going the the Celtics going back to back as a consideration, ah you're clearly not watching basketball. I think this man is on a mission and I think this could be his year. Obviously he's pretty he's done, he started seasons like that before, but I don't know. I think i think this is a a superstar step for Jason Tatum this season. Could be wrong.
55:41.60
Speaker
but I think we're about to see a bit of ah ah a jump in his cards. Not to discount Brunson, who is is incredible and this is a one of one, but I think I'm contradicting myself. If I say that one of ones are, given the amount of them, they've become less rare, I guess is the way to explain it. I don't know. If there's five different one of ones, it's kind of like a having numbered to five card in my eyes nowadays.
56:10.07
Speaker
um Anyway, let me know in the comments which card you prefer, the Jalen Brunson or the Jason Tatum. And now, because this is obviously from opening night, was Nyx Celtics, the other game. Who you got? A Anthony Edwards 2020 Prism Black Gold to five, BGS nine or A LeBron James 2016 select courtside black one of one, BGS 9.5. I love it, I love the fact that it's a rookie card. LeBron one of one, this is a tough one. um i so I came into this thinking the LeBron, like didn't even, but it's not, ah it's like it's it's the team holding the the championship number to five, Anthony Edwards, rookie.
57:07.61
Speaker
It's a BGS 9 though. If they were both 9.5s, I'd take the Edwards. That 9 instead of being it. Yeah, I think I'd take the Lebron. I take the Lebron. um If you take the Edwards, please, please, as I said, let me know in the comments. ah let Let us know right into the socials. I'm curious. I love card versus card and every time we get the opportunity to do it, it's it's nice. I like to hear the the rationale behind what would what would make that decision for you. For me, the Anthony Edwards, if it was a 9.5, I think I'd be more inclined, because then I'd, guess I'd be tempted to try and cross it to a PSA 10, but
57:49.36
Speaker
yeah Yeah, the lebron LeBron Black one of one is my one for this. And with that, that takes us just over the hour, so I i managed to talk for a whole hour. I know it's not the same as a usual show,
58:05.95
Speaker
But I do appreciate everybody that has listened and and stuck around for the recap of the first five days of the NBA. ah We'll be back to regular scheduled programming next week. Please don't go anywhere. No, I won't be. Bernie up here. Russell will return.
58:24.13
Speaker
Thank you everybody. Thanks again to all of our sponsors, the Hobby Hangout, Fastbreak Collectibles and US Sports Cards Australia. You guys, that we we couldn't do the show without you. We really appreciated the listeners. We couldn't do it without you either. Thanks for for hanging out for another hour of your your your day and I'll be back with Russell next week.
